PTC is pleased to feature a guest blog from a partner organization, LEAP Australia.

LEAP Australia, we understand the important role that universities play in nurturing the next-generation of talented engineers & designers – many of whom will graduate to become our customers in industry.

A selection of LEAP’s experts recently participated as technical mentors for RMIT University students competing in an exciting industrial Internet of Things (IoT) and augmented reality (AR) hackathon – aiming to deliver IoT/AR-based solutions to 10 real-world industry problems across two action-packed days. We all left the hackathon feeling inspired by the creativity and ingenuity that emerged from these teams of students who used Vuforia Studio for AR and ThingWorx for IoT to deliver and present their solutions to a panel of prominent industry judges.

In the video below, you can hear from the students themselves – it is indeed exciting to see how they intuitively understood the massive digital transformation that these new technologies enable and the impact that Industry 4.0 will have on their future careers:

It was immediately clear that the students successfully grasped how AR and IoT will change the way engineers and designers work: from design/conception through to construction and asset monitoring and service/maintenance. At the conclusion of the hackathon, most students also agreed they had gained employability skills that will help differentiate them in the rapidly-changing job market, and that they valued the experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team solving real-world problems.

The 10 real-world industry problems were submitted by companies from across Australia from fields as diverse as construction, water utilities, heavy manufacturing and consumer products – which also encouraged the formation of multi-disciplinary student teams (participating students came from disciplines as diverse as IT/Computer Science, Architecture, and Mechanical, Civil and Aerospace Engineering).

Interestingly, the hackathon also presented an opportunity for representatives from these companies to experience for the first time how Industry 4.0 and IoT technologies can be rapidly deployed to solve their real-world business issues.

In hindsight the critical factor to the success of the hackathon that enabled these students to deliver relevant and useful solutions in such a short timeframe was that they were able to rapidly learn the software (without requiring any coding skills).

At LEAP, we have no doubt that this could not have been achieved without the use of Vuforia Studio and ThingWorx!
